Kesgro's experiences with ProDrain and MM

Kesgro is a business with three glasshouses, each 22 acres in size, and is situated in Middenmeer, a town in the Dutch province of North Holland. Kesgro specializes in tomato production. Since recently, the business has been using a number of ProDrain systems and moisture meters (MM). We, therefore, caught up with Martin van der Hout, Kesgro’s general manager, to ask him about his experiences with this new equipment.

We’ve been using ProDrain since the first trials. It has become an indispensable tool to our operations and we have installed ProDrain systems in all our greenhouses. Since we have 5 second generation systems, we can compare different crop varieties and consistently apply the required irrigation volume for each of them.

We’ve been using ProDrain since 2007. First at our GATES™ greenhouse and now all our Texas facilities will be equipped with at least one ProDrain system. The information that ProDrain provides us is priceless: we can use it for irrigation management, stress detection, growth monitoring, and production planning. It is key to our GATES concept, and without it we wouldn’t have been able to go to the edge of what is possible with the plants and learn about their capabilities in high radiation climate.

We’ve been using ProDrain for over two years now and we wouldn’t know how to work without it. We have a semi-closed greenhouse with artificial lighting. In a normal greenhouse, plant transpiration is mainly the result of solar radiation: the correlation is almost 90%. In our greenhouse, this correlation is perhaps only 50%.

After seeing the results at a colleague, we decided to install a ProDrain system in one of our older greenhouses. From the outset, we have learned a great deal from the ProDrain system. Using irrigation triggers based on time or radiation, we were never able to accurately match our water application to the water uptake of the plants.
