WUR designs research centres in Middle East

Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture is involved in the building of two new horticultural research centres in the Middle East, where food security and food safety are key political and social issues. HortiMaX is also involved, supplying products for the project.

The research centres will be built in various phases. In cooperation with the future users of the centres, a research agenda has been formulated for the coming years. Based on this agenda and other conditions, such as the budget, Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture prepared a design for the centres. This design was sent as a tender document to various greenhouse builders worldwide. The research activities will start as soon as the centres have been completed.

The main research theme for the Middle East is water efficient food production. Possible technologies in this field, such as soilless culture combined with drain water recirculation and alternative cooling methods, will be studied and compared to the current state-of-the-art systems. Based on the scientific knowledge gained through this research, an economic sustainable assessment will be made of which technologies will be most effective in this region. To control the environmental processes in the greenhouses, both research centres will use a high-end process computer: the HortMaX MultiMa. The MultiMa computer will be operated using our advanced HortiMaX Synopta software.
