Hip Hop Guatemala at HortiMaX

At the start of 2010, HortiMaX decided to direct its focus on a number of high-growth countries in the horticultural sector. Thanks to its efforts in the US and Mexico, HortiMaX now also operates in Central America. For instance, in Guatemala, HortiMaX is currently working on a large project for a tomato nursery owned by Del Monte, the well-known fruit and vegetable supplier. It was through this project that HortiMaX learned about the poor social conditions in Guatemala. As a result, we decided to support a local initiative of AGH Trasciende, called ‘Hip Hop Guatemala’.

Corruption, poverty and domestic violence are all part of the daily reality of youths living in the slums of Guatemala City, and many have no prospect of a better life. AGH Trasciende offers these youths an alternative to the streets in the shape of a break dance school in Guatemala City. The school gives the youths an opportunity to develop their talents. This helps them to build friendships, which makes them less likely to join local youth gangs.

Partly with HortiMaX’s help, a few of these youths recently visited the Netherlands, where they showed off their break-dancing skills at a holiday fair, a school and even during a staff meeting at HortiMaX’s main office. This live performance allowed staff to see first hand how HortiMaX’s corporate social responsibility was impacting the lives of others.

Hip Hop Guatemala is also one of the initiatives supported by Edventure. This is a tour operator that offers holiday packages to Central America, which contribute to local social environmental projects. For more information, please visit http://www.edventure.biz .
